In what can only be described as a courtroom comedy, a Nigerian lawyer has shared the hilarious and shocking story of how her client, who was in the middle of divorce proceedings, turned up pregnant—for the same husband she was trying to separate from!

Edidiong Offiong, a female lawyer based in Nigeria, took to her law firm’s official Facebook page to recount how a routine divorce case spiraled into unexpected drama, complete with courtroom laughter, stunned silence, and more than a few awkward moments.

According to Offiong, she initially advised her client to consider an amicable settlement, especially since the husband had expressed a strong desire to reconcile. But her client stood her ground: no settlement, no talking, no turning back.

Despite numerous calls from the husband—who somehow got Offiong’s number—begging the lawyer to help mediate or talk to his wife “woman to woman,” the client remained adamant. So, as a good professional, Offiong followed instructions and moved forward with the divorce case.

Everything was going smoothly, or so she thought. Just two weeks before a critical court date, her client dropped a bombshell: she wanted to withdraw the case. When asked why, she calmly revealed—she was seven months pregnant.

Understandably concerned, Offiong feared the pregnancy might belong to someone else, which could complicate the divorce even further. But after some gentle probing, she discovered, to her utter shock, that the baby was indeed the husband’s.

Yes, the same husband she was fighting tooth and nail to divorce.“I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Offiong wrote, recalling the moment in court when the opposing counsel, clearly in the know, told the judge to ask her why she looked so surprised. Apparently, he had known all along but decided to wait for her client to spill the beans.

As for the husband, he couldn’t stop smiling and thanking Offiong in court. The once-defiant wife now stood bashfully behind him, the courtroom awkwardly caught between shock and amusement.

Reflecting on the emotional toll the case took on her, Offiong didn’t hold back.“These two lovebirds who couldn’t settle their issues out of court stressed my brain,” she wrote.

She ended with some candid advice: “If you’re not fully ready for divorce, please don’t go stressing your lawyer or the court. Try a break, or settle amicably. Don’t come and shock everybody halfway through the process.”

Lesson learned: Before heading to court, make sure you’re not secretly headed back to the bedroom.
