Air Peace has confirmed that one of its aircraft, Flight P47190, was involved in a runway excursion while landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday.
The flight, which departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, veered slightly off the runway during its landing phase. The airline has emphasized that there were no injuries and no damage to the aircraft.
In a statement issued by Mr. Osifo-Whiskey Efe, spokesperson for the airline, the company said: “The aircraft veered slightly off the runway without any damage. All passengers disembarked safely and calmly without any injury.”
The airline reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to safety, stating: “We reassure the flying public of our unflinching commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety in all our operations.”
A runway excursion is a term used in aviation to describe an incident where an aircraft leaves the runway surface during takeoff or landing, either by veering off to the side or overshooting the runway.
A Pattern of Concern?
This incident is the latest in a series of runway excursions in Nigeria. It comes roughly seven months after a similar event involving Allied Air. On December 11, 2024, a Boeing 737-400 (5N-JRT) operated by the cargo airline skidded off Runway 22 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. That aircraft, arriving from Lagos as Flight AJK206, also veered off to the right and came to a stop on the grass verge.
While no injuries were reported in either case, the back-to-back incidents highlight the need for continuous safety audits and infrastructure evaluations at Nigerian airports to mitigate operational risks.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is yet to issue an official statement on Sunday’s incident.
