President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The institution will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
Tinubu made the announcement on Thursday during a special session attended by cabinet members, senior government officials, and presidential aides. The president delivered a heartfelt tribute, describing Buhari as a man of “discipline, moral fortitude, and unwavering patriotism.”
“He was not a perfect man—no leader is—but he was a good, decent, and honourable man,” Tinubu said, drawing reflective silence across the chamber.
Describing Buhari’s leadership as one of “austere honour,” Tinubu praised his resistance to political temptations and his steadfast moral compass.
Tinubu concluded his tribute by reaffirming: “The incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten.”
The renaming of the university is seen as a significant gesture to immortalize Buhari’s legacy and contributions to national leadership.
