The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to staff welfare and institutional efficiency as key pillars of its economic transformation agenda, with the commissioning of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses at the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, made the announcement during a staff engagement forum where he officially launched a fleet of CNG buses delivered under the Presidential Initiative on CNG.
According to Edun, the initiative reflects the government’s dual focus on boosting internal operations and supporting Nigeria’s transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
“This Ministry is the engine room of national transformation, and that engine must be well-fuelled,” Edun remarked.
The introduction of the CNG buses is expected to ease transportation for staff while promoting environmentally friendly and cost-effective mobility solutions. It also supports President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic reform and energy transition agenda.
In a further morale boost for staff, the Minister announced the reintroduction of monthly welfare provisions, which had previously been suspended. He described the move as essential for empowering the workforce that is spearheading major reforms including macroeconomic stability, treasury digitalisation, and improved public service delivery.
Also present at the event was the Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Barrister Ismaeel Ahmed, who stated that the initiative aims to embed clean transportation systems in public institutions and drive growth across Nigeria’s local industrial value chains.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, praised the Minister’s leadership and urged staff to recommit themselves to professionalism and discipline. She described the gathering as “a timely moment of unity” amid ongoing economic reforms, and encouraged staff to uphold the high level of accountability expected from a ministry central to Nigeria’s financial stability.
The commissioning of the CNG buses marks a practical step in aligning public sector operations with sustainable development goals, while also reinforcing the government’s focus on staff wellbeing and operational excellence.
