Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have written a new chapter in African basketball history by claiming their fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket Women’s title.

In a dominant display on Sunday, they defeated Mali 78-64 in Côte d’Ivoire, reinforcing their reputation as the powerhouse of African women’s basketball.

The victory not only extended Nigeria’s dominance on the continent but also shattered Senegal’s longstanding record of four consecutive titles set between 1974 and 1981.

With this win, D’Tigress have now secured a total of seven AfroBasket titles, further solidifying their legacy.

“Mali demonstrated their determination to end Nigeria’s winning streak, drawing the first blood by winning the first quarter 26-21.”

Unfazed by the early setback, Nigeria’s women found their rhythm in the second quarter, tightening their defence and executing key plays to outscore Mali 20-15.

“D’Tigress dug deeper into their technical books of tricks to rally back in the second quarter with a 20-15 win.”

From that point on, Nigeria took control of the game. Their relentless pace, tactical execution, and teamwork were on full display as they widened the gap.

In the final quarter, D’Tigress sealed the victory with a commanding 17-8 performance.

“With their eyes on the prize, the Nigerian girls wrapped up the game with a 17-8 win against their West African neighbours.”
