Team Nigeria wrapped up their campaign at the maiden African School Games in Algeria with an impressive haul of 25 medals consisting of 6 gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze across 10 sporting events. The performance placed Nigeria 4th overall, behind hosts Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia.

In a symbolic highlight of the closing ceremony, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Algerian hosts officially handed over the host’s flag to Nigeria, marking the country’s emergence as the official host of the 2nd African School Games in 2027.

Director General of the Nigeria Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, praised the athletes for their performance, discipline, and commitment to the nation.

“These Games have shown us that the future of Nigerian sports is not only bright but it is unstoppable. Our young athletes have demonstrated courage, skill, and heart. This exposure will go a long way in preparing them for even greater stages,” Olopade said.

“The African School Games is about more than competition; it’s about building a generation that believes in unity, hard work, and national pride. We are proud of every athlete, coach, and official who represented Nigeria with dignity and excellence.”

While the medal tally reflects Nigeria’s competitive edge, Olopade emphasised that the real victory lies in the exposure and life-changing experiences gained by the young student-athletes, many of whom represented the country on an international stage for the first time.

The Games, he noted, provided a platform to nurture emerging talents, promote Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, and spark a renewed spirit of patriotism and ambition.

He also commended the Algerian government and ANOCA for organising a successful inaugural edition, assuring that Nigeria will “raise the bar” in 2027 with a world-class hosting experience.

Upon returning home, Team Nigeria will be officially hosted by the National Sports Commission in a special reception to celebrate their achievements before any further celebration.
