The Nigerian government has announced the shutdown of 13,597,057 social media accounts across TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X for “offensive contents and violations of the code of practice.
“This was disclosed in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
According to the report, promoters of major interactive computer service platforms, including Google, Microsoft and TikTok, confirmed their compliance efforts in tackling harmful online activities.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 20, NITDA spokesperson Hadiza Umar revealed that a total of 58,909,112 offensive contents were removed from various platforms during the review period.
The agency added that it received 754,629 registered complaints from users, leading to the removal and re-upload of 420,439 pieces of content after appeals.
“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines,” Umar said.
She added that the government remained committed to collaborating with industry players, civil society and regulatory partners to “further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.”
