Electricity supply across Nigeria began to stabilise on Thursday after power generation companies (GenCos) restored 3,228 megawatts (MW) to the grid in the early hours of the day.
This follows Wednesday’s nationwide blackout triggered by the collapse of the national electricity grid.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed that restoration efforts commenced immediately after the incident. In a statement, the operator described the collapse as a “system disturbance” caused by the tripping of a GenCo, which resulted in a sharp drop in load and a cascading effect on other generating companies.
The recovery comes as distribution companies (DisCos) gradually energise supply to households and businesses nationwide.
