The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has clarified his recent altercation with a naval officer, Lt. A. Yerima, over an alleged land dispute in Abuja, stressing that his comments were misunderstood and taken out of context.

Speaking with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, Wike explained that his statements were aimed at upholding lawful conduct among security operatives, not at criticizing the military.

“What I said was simple—no officer or individual should carry out an illegal order. If an instruction is unlawful, you have the right to say no. That does not mean I have a problem with the military,” the minister said.

He reiterated his deep respect for the Armed Forces, describing them as a crucial partner in maintaining peace and security within the FCT and across Nigeria.

“Let me make it clear: I do not have any problem with the military and will never have. I have great respect for the institution and for the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe,” Wike affirmed.

The minister highlighted his administration’s ongoing support for military operations through logistics, infrastructure, and security collaboration, adding that claims to the contrary were “simply not true.”

“As FCT Minister, I have continued to provide support to the military in their operations. Anyone saying otherwise is simply not telling the truth,” he said.

Wike also cautioned journalists against misreporting and sensationalism, urging the media to uphold professionalism and accuracy.

“I want journalists to always verify facts and report accurately. Do not cut or misquote statements to suit headlines. Let us focus on what builds our country,” he advised.
