Twenty-four students abducted from Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) Maga in Kebbi State have been rescued, security sources confirmed on Tuesday.
Although details of the rescue operation remain sketchy as of press time, multiple security officials said a formal statement is expected later tonight.
The schoolgirls were kidnapped on November 17 when armed bandits invaded the school premises, killing a staff member and injuring a security guard before fleeing with 25 students.
Two of the girls had earlier escaped, according to a BBC report quoting Hussaini Aliyu, an official of Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area. The students were said to have fled while being marched into the bush and navigated their way to safety through surrounding farmlands.
On November 19, Aliyu, who chairs the Danko/Wasagu council, released the names of the 25 abducted students as security agencies intensified search and rescue efforts.
Authorities are expected to provide more information on the condition of the rescued schoolgirls and ongoing measures to secure the area.
