A brief interaction between the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has stirred public debate after a video from a state function in Ibadan surfaced online.

The incident occurred on Monday during the 2026 interfaith thanksgiving service held at the Grand Space, near the Oyo State House of Assembly, which was attended by traditional rulers, government officials and religious leaders. Footage from the event shows the Olubadan moving towards his seat beside the Alaafin, who was already seated. As Oba Ladoja approached, the Alaafin reportedly stretched out his hand in greeting, but the gesture was not reciprocated, leading to an awkward moment that quickly spread across social media.

The development has revived long-standing conversations around hierarchy and protocol between the two prominent Yoruba traditional institutions. In reaction, Ibadan traditional leaders, including monarchs, Mogajis, Baales and other notable indigenes, issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Alaafin’s action, which they described as inappropriate and disrespectful.

According to the statement, the leaders argued that extending a handshake while seated, particularly within Ibadan territory, fell short of acceptable traditional conduct. They stressed that Ibadan is not subordinate to Oyo and insisted that the Olubadan stool must be accorded full respect at all times.

The group also appealed to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to intervene and caution the Alaafin, warning that repeated actions perceived as slighting Ibadan’s traditional institutions could provoke public backlash. They referenced earlier disagreements and said patience among Ibadan residents was wearing thin.

Emphasising the stature of the Olubadan, the leaders noted that Oba Ladoja is not only a traditional ruler but also a former governor and senator, deserving of honour in both traditional and public settings.

Governor Makinde, who also attended the event, did not address the controversy directly. In a social media post, he described the gathering as an opportunity for residents to unite across religious lines and express gratitude, while also acknowledging the contributions of civil servants in the state.

The incident has continued to generate reactions online, with many Nigerians debating issues of tradition, protocol and respect among royal institutions.
