The United States has supplied a new batch of defence equipment to Nigerian security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s fight against terrorism and insecurity.

The delivery was confirmed on Tuesday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), which said the materials were handed over to Nigerian authorities in Abuja to enhance ongoing security operations.

According to AFRICOM, the support reflects continued cooperation between both countries and is intended to improve Nigeria’s operational effectiveness against armed extremist groups operating within and around its borders.

The latest assistance comes against the backdrop of heightened US military activity in the region, including a Christmas Day air operation in which American forces reportedly struck ISWAP targets in parts of Sokoto State.

US President Donald Trump has recently adopted a hardline stance on Nigeria, warning that Washington could take further action against militant groups accused of targeting Christian communities. In October 2025, the US administration placed Nigeria on its list of “Countries of Particular Concern,” citing alleged large-scale abuses against Christians.

Trump has repeatedly criticised Nigeria’s handling of insecurity, describing the situation as unacceptable and cautioning that continued violence against civilians could attract direct foreign intervention.

AFRICOM noted that the equipment delivery forms part of a broader strategy to deepen security collaboration with West African nations facing persistent extremist threats, while also improving regional stability.
