The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc have announced the passing of Chief Israel C. Ogbue, former Chairman of the bank, who died peacefully at the age of 99.

Described as a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator, Chief Ogbue devoted more than six decades to public and private sector service in Nigeria, leaving a legacy defined by integrity, discipline and institutional excellence.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, he began his professional career in the Federal Civil Service before proceeding to the United Kingdom for further studies. He later built an accomplished career at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he rose through senior management ranks and served with distinction until his retirement in 1988.

His reputation for sound governance and administrative expertise earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA. He joined the UBA Board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and was appointed Chairman in 2011. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 2013.

During his tenure, Chief Ogbue provided steady and principled leadership at a pivotal period in the bank’s transformation, strengthening its culture of corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability.

Beyond his corporate achievements, he was known as a devoted family patriarch and mentor. He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to the Group Chairman of UBA Group, Tony Elumelu.

Remembered for his humility and deep faith, Chief Ogbue often attributed his longevity to God’s grace, encouraging younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation, remain resilient in adversity and place their trust in God.

In a statement on Wednesday, UBA extended its condolences to his family and associates, celebrating what it described as “a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact,” and honouring his contributions to the bank and Nigeria’s corporate landscape.

Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
