Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift in the state.
In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri announced that members of his cabinet and several key stakeholders had also joined him in leaving the PDP for the ruling APC. He described the move as a collective decision taken after consultations with political allies and supporters across the state.
The governor’s defection comes days after 15 members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly resigned from the PDP. Among those who exited the party were Speaker Bathiya Wesley and Deputy Speaker Buba Jijiwa.
The lawmakers attributed their decision to what they described as a lingering internal crisis within the PDP, saying the instability had made it difficult for them to continue under the party’s platform.
With Fintiri’s departure, the PDP’s presence among serving state governors has further diminished, leaving the party with only three governors nationwide.
Political observers say the development could significantly reshape the political landscape in Adamawa State ahead of future elections, while also deepening the challenges facing the PDP at the national level.
