The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, shifting both the presidential and governorship polls.
Under the revised timetable, the presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on January 16, 2027. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections have been scheduled for February 6, 2027.
The announcement was made on Thursday by Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in an official statement.
INEC had earlier slated the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections were fixed for March 6, 2027. However, the commission said the adjustment became necessary following recent changes to the country’s electoral framework.
According to the statement, the repeal of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act, 2026 required a review of the previously issued schedule to align with the new legal provisions.
INEC stated that the updated timetable would guide political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
