The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years in prison over a fraud case involving N868.46 million.

Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges related to money laundering.

In a statement posted on its official X account on Monday, the anti-graft agency described the conviction as a significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen accountability and combat financial crimes in the public sector.

According to the EFCC, the case involved the diversion and concealment of public funds totaling over N868 million. The agency detailed how the funds were allegedly laundered through multiple transactions.

The court delivered its judgment after examining evidence presented by the prosecution, which outlined the movement and handling of the funds in question.

The 72-year sentence reflects the cumulative penalties for several counts on which Nwabuoku was found guilty.

Nwabuoku had previously served briefly as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation before his removal from office following allegations of corruption.
