Nigerian businessman and socialite Obi Cubana has issued a public apology to the Igbo community following widespread backlash over comments he made at a political gathering.
Cubana came under fire after he was heard saying that “Igbo people lack knowledge” during a Cityboy movement event attended by Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah. His remarks were reportedly made in response to criticism from some Igbos over his perceived support for the Tinubu movement, given his strong influence within the community and the current economic challenges facing Nigerians.
In an interview with the BBC, Cubana expressed regret over the controversy, stating that his comments had been taken out of context and did not reflect his true views about his people.
The statement sparked widespread outrage across social media and within Igbo communities, with many condemning what they saw as a derogatory generalisation. Critics argued that the remark was insensitive, especially considering Cubana’s standing and influence.
His apology aims to address the concerns raised and ease tensions following the incident, as reactions continue to trail the controversial statement.
