In his welcome address, the National Coordinator of the National Counterterrorism Centre and host, Major General Adamu Laka, underscored the critical role of women in shaping society and countering violent extremism through effective communication. He described women as “agents of positive change,” stressing that amplifying their voices in security and governance remains essential.

Delivering opening remarks, the National Chairperson of the NIPR IWD Planning Committee, Hajia Lami Tumaka highlighted the importance of unity among women, dismissing narratives that portray women as unsupportive of one another. She described the theme as a call to action, urging stronger collaboration and visibility for women across sectors.

President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, traced the historical struggles of women and their enduring contributions to nation-building. He noted that while women have long demonstrated resilience and leadership, structural barriers and inequalities, particularly in access and pay—persist.

Reaffirming NIPR’s commitment to inclusivity, he said that the world has moved on from just praising women for their sacrifices and resilience, but believes “that women should now rise, lead and do incredible things.”

“A nation that silences women silences half of its future,” he said, adding that empowering women accelerates national development. He continued by saying that “When women are enabled to contribute, society does not diminish, instead they flourish” Empowered Women have demonstrated brilliance, resilience and transformative leadership.

He also announced that Nigeria will host the World Public Relations Forum in November 2026, with participation expected from about 127 countries.

Special Guest of Honour and Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, reaffirmed the value of women in governance, citing his administration’s appointment of seven female commissioners as part of efforts to drive inclusive leadership.

Reinforcing the ongoing conversation, Special adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination and Keynote speaker, Hadiza Bala Usman emphasised the distinction between equality and equity, urging stakeholders to address systemic barriers that limit women’s participation. She called for reforms in workplace policies, particularly those affecting women in their childbearing years, and warned against misrepresenting progress by spotlighting only a few successful women to “Whitewash the situation and present a reality that does not represent the majority of women”.

Goodwill messages from female political leaders, development partners, and international organisations reinforced the need for institutional reforms and greater opportunities for women.

A panel session featuring industry experts, including Dr. Dakuku Peterside, Linus Okorie, Areje Adegoke, and Hajia Fatima Umaru Shinkafi, examined the role of media and communication in redistributing power more equitably. Speakers stressed the need for intentional language and narratives that promote inclusion, while highlighting exemplary leadership by women such as the late Dora Akunyili as a benchmark for impact.

The programme concluded with a special recognition award to the unsung heroines who contribute to the society through their hard work, initiatives and grass root programs.
