A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, barely three months after dumping the African Democratic Congress.
Lawal made his defection known in Abuja on Tuesday, declaring his unalloyed support for the NDC’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His move to the opposition party comes on the heels of his resignation from the ADC over allegations that the party’s presidential primary was manipulated to favor former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a resignation statement previously shared on his official Facebook page, the former SGF stated that he could no longer remain in a party whose primary process he described as fundamentally flawed.
He alleged that election results were deliberately altered to favor Atiku and his supporters, adding that declared winners were allegedly replaced even in areas where voting took place.
Speaking after being formally received into the party in Abuja, Lawal urged patriotic citizens to rally round the NDC, citing the growing wave of insecurity, hunger, ignorance, and disease in the country.
He emphasized that anyone with the country’s interest at heart must support a platform that offers real hope, adding that sensible Nigerians should partner with the NDC to ensure the realization of an Obi-Kwankwaso presidency by May 29, 2027.
Welcoming the politician, NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, described Lawal as a seasoned political mobiliser and activist with extensive experience in Nigerian politics.
Dickson noted that Lawal has witnessed political parties fail on their promises and take the country “from top to bottom,” expressing confidence in his capacity to lead.
The NDC leadership subsequently tasked Lawal with overseeing the party’s activities and campaign operations across the North-Eastern region of the country, expecting him to provide guidance and resolve internal issues.
