NIMC Seizes Equipment, Warns Against Unauthorised NIN Registration Centres

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested individuals suspected of conducting illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment in Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory, and other parts of the country.

The commission said its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit carried out the operation, during which equipment allegedly used for the unauthorised activities was also confiscated.

In a statement issued on Monday by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the operation was part of its ongoing efforts to tackle unauthorised enrolment, illegal modification of personal data and the extortion of applicants.

The Director-General of the commission, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated NIMC’s zero-tolerance policy towards extortion and unprofessional conduct, according to the statement.

The commission warned Nigerians that NIN enrolment should only be conducted at approved centres, while requests for data modification should be processed through its official self-service platform.

It also urged members of the public to avoid unauthorised enrolment centres and use approved channels, including the NINAuth application, which provides security features such as NIN protection and slip printing.

NIMC advised anyone seeking clarification or wishing to report complaints to contact its toll-free line on 0800 0616 462.
