Tinubu’s Akwa Ibom Visit: Bus, Security Hilux Crash in Uyo, Leaving Many Injured

Several people were injured on Wednesday when a bus belonging to the Akwa Ibom State Transport Corporation (AKTC), conveying women to welcome President Bola Tinubu, collided with a security vehicle along Oron Road in Uyo.

The women were reportedly part of a group of supporters mobilised to join Governor Umo Eno in receiving the President, who travelled to Akwa Ibom State through Calabar for an official visit.

The crash involved an AKTC bus heading towards the airport and a security Hilux van. Both vehicles reportedly suffered extensive damage, leaving several occupants injured and in need of emergency assistance.

Footage shared by Nsikakabasi Akpan, who captured the aftermath of the incident, showed first responders and other individuals making efforts to evacuate injured passengers from the wreckage.

Akpan described the incident as a collision involving a bus conveying women to the airport to receive the President and a security Hilux vehicle.

Confirming the accident, Paul James, Public Relations Officer, Road Safety Operations, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom State Command, said the command had deployed a response team to the scene.

However, James explained that the FRSC was yet to determine the number of casualties or establish the circumstances that led to the collision.

The incident occurred amid preparations for Tinubu’s visit, which drew supporters and political stakeholders to the state to welcome the President and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The presidential couple were later received by Governor Eno at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, where they began their official engagements in the state.

A major highlight of the visit was the unveiling of the airport’s new terminal, an infrastructure project expected to support the commencement of international flight operations at the facility.

As of the time of filing this report, the FRSC had not officially confirmed the extent of the injuries, the number of victims involved or reports of possible fatalities.
