The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has pulled no punches as it called on President Bola Tinubu to resign from office with immediate effect. The opposition party accused the President of failing woefully in his constitutional duty to protect the lives and properties of everyday Nigerians who are currently at the mercy of worsening insecurity blowing across the country.
This heavy knock on the presidency is coming on the heels of mounting public outcry following the recent, daring abduction of scores of pupils and teachers by gunmen in Oyo State.
In a statement released on Thursday, the National Chairman of the PRP, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, lamented that things have degenerated to an alarming level under the current administration, giving violent criminals a free day to operate without fear.
According to the PRP chieftain, nowhere is safe in the country anymore as insecurity has eaten deep into every single corner of the country.
“It is now beyond any doubt that President Bola Tinubu has failed woefully in discharging his prime responsibility as Nigerian President, which is to secure the Nigerian citizen. Under his watch, old threats have blossomed and mutated, while more and more Nigerians, irrespective of status or age, have fallen victim to violent criminals,” Baba-Ahmed said.
The opposition leader cried out over how bad things have gotten, noting that even innocent schoolchildren and the most vulnerable citizens have now become primary targets for ruthless bandits and kidnappers.
“From Generals to toddlers; from Bama to Badagry, no Nigerian is safe under this leadership. It is no longer the case that only parts of the country have been virtually surrendered to criminals. Now, no Nigerian in any part of the country is protected from rampant violent criminals who exploit our major weakness,” he lamented.
“School children have joined the long stretch of soft targets, and the nation appears to be at the point of accepting this situation as normal. We must not submit to the weakness of leaders and the exploits of criminals.
This is not how Nigerians should live,” Baba-Ahmed added.
Going further, the PRP National Chairman criticized Tinubu for amassing enormous powers around the presidency without utilizing those powers to change the security situation on the ground for the masses.
“Our President has failed the nation, and there is no evidence that he can improve on his pathetic record. He has amassed all the power in the country around him, yet he has failed to use it to protect and defend Nigerians,” he stated.
The former presidential aide made it clear that true democratic governance relies heavily on accountability and responsibility, maintaining that it is totally unacceptable for the President to remain in office while the country burns under a heavy wave of criminal attacks.
“In most other democracies, President Tinubu’s failure to respect the values of accountability and responsibility would not have been tolerated. Nigerians must rise to demand an end to this ineptitude and indifference. President Tinubu should resign, now!” Baba-Ahmed fired.
“While he may have the luxury of ignoring our current deteriorating circumstances and awaiting the verdict of rejection by voters in 2027, Nigerians who will continue to fall victim to violent criminals do not have the luxury of waiting to vote him out in 2027,” the statement noted.
“There is nothing democratic in insisting that incompetent and uncaring leadership must complete terms. Nigerians should demand, with one voice, that President Tinubu’s failure to secure Nigerians cannot be tolerated any further,” Baba-Ahmed added.
This fierce blast from the opposition party comes at a time when Nigerians are increasingly worried about non-stop stories of banditry, kidnappings, communal clashes, and bloody attacks on communities across the country, prompting urgent calls for the Federal Government to step up its game.
However, defending its track record, the Presidency has maintained on several occasions that the Tinubu administration inherited deeply entrenched, long-standing security challenges, promising that it is continuously deploying military boots and intelligence assets to flush out criminal elements across the federation.
