A young woman identified simply as Eno has died after she was struck by a speeding vehicle near the Rivers State University campus in Port Harcourt, with police confirming the arrest of two suspects in connection with the incident.

The fatal crash, which occurred close to the university, left the victim with severe injuries after the impact reportedly threw her to the ground, causing a fatal head injury.

Witnesses said occupants of the vehicles involved initially fled the scene after realising the woman had died.

According to accounts circulating on social media, the vehicles were allegedly part of a convoy of suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as “Yahoo boys,” who were reportedly racing within the vicinity of the university when one of the drivers lost control and struck the pedestrian.

The claims regarding the suspects’ identities and the alleged street racing have not been independently verified by the police.

An eyewitness said security personnel attached to Rivers State University, alongside officers from the Nigeria Police Force, were immediately alerted and swiftly secured all exit routes from the campus.

The witness added that operatives of the Nkpolu Police Division, working with the university’s security team, later arrested two suspects identified as Onunaka and Daniel, who were reportedly driving a Toyota Camry Spider and a Mercedes-Benz E300, respectively.

The two suspects are believed to be students of Rivers State University, although authorities have yet to officially confirm their status.

Police said the suspects are currently being held at the Nkpolu Police Division in Mile 3, Diobu, while the body of the deceased has been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko Agabe, said two persons had been arrested and that investigations were ongoing.

“Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while the woman’s corpse has been retrieved and deposited in the mortuary. So, yes, I can confirm the incident, and investigation is ongoing,” the police spokesperson said.
