The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and prosecution of a man identified as Emeka Joseph over allegations of domestic violence and assault following widespread public outrage triggered by a viral video showing a young woman with visible injuries.

In a statement released through its official X account, the command said investigations were launched after reports emerged accusing Joseph of physically attacking a woman identified as Ezeka Chisom.

According to the police, preliminary findings established that the victim suffered facial injuries during the incident.

The command disclosed that the suspect has since been arraigned before a court and remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the continuation of legal proceedings.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with a case of assault occasioning harm and domestic violence following a viral video in which there was a report that Emeka Joseph assaulted Ezeka Chisom,” the statement said.

Police added that the victim and the suspect had been living together prior to the incident and that investigations confirmed she sustained injuries as a result of the alleged assault.

Authorities further revealed that the matter has been adjourned until August 3, 2026, for further hearing.

The case attracted national attention after videos and images purportedly showing the injured woman circulated widely across social media platforms, prompting calls for swift intervention by security agencies and rights groups.

Reports surrounding the incident alleged that the victim, an 18-year-old woman from Ebonyi State, had been subjected to repeated abuse while living with the suspect in Lagos.

Residents in the area were also said to have confronted Joseph over concerns about the woman’s welfare after noticing visible signs of physical violence.

According to accounts shared online, neighbours accused the suspect of repeatedly mistreating the young woman. However, he allegedly dismissed their concerns and insisted that they stay out of what he described as his private affairs.

The viral footage subsequently generated widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians demanding justice for the victim and urging authorities to ensure her safety.

With the suspect now in custody and facing prosecution, the police say the matter remains before the court while further legal proceedings continue.
