….From Operation White and landmark PSC negotiations to sub $10 production costs, gas development and crude oil security, accomplished energy strategist gets new mandate
After more than three decades of driving reforms across Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, Bala Wunti, one of the country’s most accomplished energy executives and strategists, has been appointed the inaugural Chief Executive Officer of the World Energy Council, WEC Nigeria.
The appointment places a tested industry reformer at the helm of an organisation expected to play an influential role in shaping Nigeria’s energy security, investment, affordability and sustainability agenda.
Announced by the Board of WEC Nigeria, Wunti’s appointment establishes the organisation’s first dedicated executive leadership structure since Nigeria joined the World Energy Council in 1960.
Wunti brings more than 30 years of experience spanning the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors, with a career marked by major commercial, operational and institutional reforms at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd.
As Chief Upstream Investment Officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Services, NUIMS, Wunti managed Nigeria’s multibillion dollar joint venture and Production Sharing Contract portfolio, putting him at the centre of major investment decisions involving international and indigenous energy companies.
Among his notable accomplishments was his role in the successful renegotiation of Nigeria’s Deep Offshore Production Sharing Contracts, PSCs, helping to resolve longstanding commercial issues and secure improved economic outcomes for the country.
He also championed cost optimisation initiatives that helped drive production costs to below $10 per barrel in key operations, strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global upstream industry.
Earlier, during his tenure at the Petroleum Products Marketing Company, PPMC, Wunti spearheaded Operation White, a technology driven petroleum products monitoring initiative that strengthened transparency, nationwide product tracking and accountability across the distribution chain.
As Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer, he also played a key role in NNPC’s transformation into a more commercially focused energy company, contributing to corporate strategy, investment and sustainability initiatives.
Wunti has been a strong advocate of Nigeria’s gas development agenda and participated in major commercial negotiations involving liquefied natural gas projects and gas sales agreements. He has consistently promoted domestic gas utilisation as an important driver of industrialisation, electricity access and economic growth.
His leadership also extended to efforts to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Wunti championed the establishment of a modern Command and Control Centre, deploying technology and operational intelligence to strengthen surveillance of critical oil and gas infrastructure and support production recovery.
Beyond Nigeria, Wunti represented the country on the OPEC Economic Commission Board and participated in the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, GECF, contributing to international discussions on energy security, market stability and gas development.
Reacting to his appointment, Wunti said Nigeria’s energy future must be shaped by practical economic and developmental realities.

Under his leadership, WEC Nigeria is expected to deepen national energy dialogue, produce evidence based research, convene policymakers, investors and industry leaders, and connect Nigeria’s energy priorities with the World Energy Council’s global network.
An alumnus of executive programmes at Harvard Business School and the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford, Wunti brings to the position a combination of technical expertise, commercial experience, institutional leadership and international energy diplomacy.
His record, spanning Operation White, PSC renegotiations, upstream cost reduction, gas development, NNPC’s transformation and technology driven efforts against crude oil theft, positions him to lead WEC Nigeria as the country seeks greater investment, energy security and a stronger voice in the global energy conversation.
