Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has stoutly defended her bold fashion choices on court, declaring that she is ready to absorb public backlash if it paves a smoother path for upcoming athletes to express themselves.
Addressing the growing wave of criticism surrounding her striking outfit selections via a social media post on Wednesday, the Japanese tennis star insisted she remains unfazed by negative reactions.
“I don’t mind being the first to do something and getting trashed for it,” she wrote.
The former World No. 1 has become globally renowned for her daring, eye-catching court attire. At the ongoing US Open, Osaka grabbed major headlines when she stepped out in a hooded white gown during her first-round match against Anastasia Zakharova.
Underneath the dramatic gown, the star wore an all-black basketball-style kit. Completing her look with braided hair and a headband, she explained that the style served as a direct tribute to former NBA star Allen Iverson, whom she hailed as a “trailblazer” in fashion.
For her latest court appearance, Osaka wore a decorated coat at the start of her last-16 encounter against Elena Rybakina, a match she eventually lost.
Drawback-seeking fans and sports commentators quickly voiced criticism, but Osaka linked the heavy pushback to the intense scrutiny she endured when speaking openly about her mental health in 2021. During that period, she withdrew from the French Open after opting out of mandatory media duties, revealing she was battling severe anxiety and depression.
“This happened when I talked about mental health and for some reason it’s happening with my clothes lol,” Osaka stated.
Emphasizing her roots, the Japanese tennis star pointed to her Haitian heritage, clarifying that expressing herself boldly is simply second nature to her identity.
“I’m literally Haitian it’s in my blood to be this way,” she said, asserting that bearing public criticism is ultimately a small price to pay if “the people after me have an easier path.”
Osaka’s latest statements highlight her persistent willingness to challenge traditional sports conventions, both on and off the court, ensuring future generations of athletes enjoy far greater freedom to display their true identities.
