Former president Goodluck
Jonathan has stated that the upcoming 2027 general election will serve as a crucial test of Nigeria’s democratic maturity, calling on citizens across the country to prioritize peace, unity, and justice.
Jonathan made the remark in his Independence Day message to Nigerians on Thursday as the country commemorated its 66th anniversary of nationhood.
The former leader noted the significance of the national milestone while recalling the country’s historic journey.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands,” he said.
Reflecting on the challenges Nigeria has faced since gaining independence, Jonathan emphasized that national resilience has consistently enabled the country to overcome adversity.
“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant,” Jonathan declared.
“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he added.
Looking ahead to the next political dispensation, the former President urged citizens to remain patriotic and committed to national cohesion as electoral activities gather momentum.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritise actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he stated.
Jonathan expressed optimism about the country’s potential, noting that Nigeria possesses vast opportunities if its diversity and human and natural assets are properly harnessed.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he noted.
Directing a special message to young people, he encouraged them to maintain courage and faith in building a prosperous future.
“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” Jonathan said.
He, however, stressed that realizing a brighter future demands sacrifice, good governance, and absolute accountability from leaders at all levels.
“Yet, for this future to be realised, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” he stated.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan insisted.
Concluding his national address, the former President called for sustained commitment to nation-building for both current and future generations.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead,” he added.
