Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared his willingness to step aside for any aspirant who emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku made the statement during an interview on Arise TV, where he addressed questions about his political ambition and the possibility of backing other contenders within the party.
When asked whether he would уступ his ambition for former Anambra State governor Peter Obi or any other candidate deemed more popular, Atiku responded: “I will step aside for any winner. If he is a contender, why not?”
He also dismissed suggestions that Obi’s previous role as his running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019 could complicate his chances within the ADC.
“Why? What is difficult there? Well, I don’t know,” he said.
The former vice president stressed that the party’s preference is to arrive at a consensus candidate but noted that a democratic process would be adopted if consensus fails.
“The first option would be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t emerge, then we go for a direct election. I will support anybody who emerges,” he stated.
Reaffirming his position, Atiku added: “We will aim at consensus. If we don’t get it, then we go for elections.”
