The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as the vice-presidential candidate to partner former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election.
The announcement was made on Monday in Abuja, with party leaders describing the Atiku-Amaechi partnership as a strategic alliance designed to offer Nigerians an alternative leadership platform ahead of the next general election.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the decision followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners and representatives from across the country.
According to the party, Amaechi’s selection was influenced by his performance during the presidential primary process and his extensive record in public service spanning more than two decades.
The ADC said the former governor brings significant experience from both the legislative and executive branches of government, having served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State and later Minister of Transportation.
Party officials described the ticket as a blend of experience, national reach and political influence, arguing that both candidates possess the leadership credentials needed to tackle Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
The statement noted that Amaechi’s political network across the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria would strengthen the party’s nationwide appeal and improve its electoral prospects ahead of the polls.
The ADC further characterised Amaechi as a seasoned administrator and coalition builder whose governance experience complements Atiku’s long-standing involvement in national politics.
According to the party, the ticket is intended to project a broad national outlook capable of attracting support across regional, political and demographic lines.
“The partnership reflects our commitment to presenting a leadership team with the experience and capacity to unite the country, restore confidence in governance and drive national development,” the statement said.
The party said its campaign would focus on key issues affecting Nigerians, including economic recovery, employment generation, national security and social cohesion.
ADC leaders also called on party members, youth groups, women organisations, civil society groups and coalition partners to mobilise support for the ticket as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
Amaechi remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, having served in several high-profile positions, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015 and Minister of Transportation between 2015 and 2023.
With the unveiling of the Atiku-Amaechi ticket, the ADC has become one of the first major political parties to signal its presidential lineup as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections begin to take shape.
