Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has charged religious institutions across the country to remain steadfast in speaking truth to power and advocating for good governance, especially during challenging economic times.
Obi made the call in a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday following his attendance at the opening of the 50th/15th Biennial Conference of the Methodist Church of Nigeria in Ibadan, Oyo State, alongside Governor Seyi Makinde.
Taking to his handle, the NDC presidential flagbearer reflected on the country’s vast potential and acknowledged the role of faith-based organizations in national development.
“Yesterday, I joined my dear brother, Governor Seyi Makinde, and faithful members of the Methodist Church from across the country and beyond at the opening of the 50th/15th Biennial Conference of the Methodist Church of Nigeria in Ibadan.
“I thank God for His faithfulness to the Methodist Church over the years and reflect on the immense potential Nigeria possesses as a nation,” Obi stated.
Highlighting the need for continuous advocacy from moral institutions, he urged the clergy and delegates not to relent in standing up for the citizens.
“I encourage the Church and its delegates to remain steadfast in speaking truth to power, standing with the suffering masses, and continuing to advocate for justice, good governance, and a better Nigeria for all, especially in these challenging times. The Church remains one of our nation’s strongest voices of hope, conscience, and moral leadership,” he wrote.
Obi also expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Methodist Church for the invitation, while making a passionate plea for prayers directed at political leaders to prioritize public interest over personal gain.
“I thank the Methodist Church for its invitation and ask that they continue to remember our nation in their prayers. I urge them always to pray that God Almighty would touch the hearts of politicians and leaders, so that they will always think and use public resources for the public good,” he added.
Concluding his post, Obi extended his goodwill to the delegates gathered in Ibadan.
“I wish them a fruitful and successful conference. A New Nigeria is POssible,” he noted.
