The Enugu State Police Command has ordered the immediate enforcement of all existing traffic laws across the state, directing its officers to arrest and prosecute any motorist who violates road traffic regulations.
The command explained that the crackdown became necessary following the rampant and increasing disregard for traffic rules by road users, a trend that has triggered severe traffic gridlock, disruption of free movement, avoidable road crashes, loss of lives, and destruction of property across the state.
Issuing the directive, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, stated that the move aligns directly with the mandate of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on nationwide enforcement of traffic laws to restore sanity to Nigerian roads and safeguard lives and property.
Disclosure of the development was contained in a statement signed and made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
According to the statement, CP Giwa directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the Command’s Legal Officer, and the State Traffic Officer to supervise the operation and ensure strict, professional enforcement of the directive across all divisions.
The designated senior officers were specifically instructed to ensure the prompt arrest and prosecution of traffic offenders in total accordance with extant laws and traffic regulations.
However, the police boss cautioned officers involved in the enforcement exercise against violating the rights and dignity of motorists, commercial drivers, and other road users, warning that the operations must be executed with high professional standards.
CP Giwa warned that any police personnel caught engaging in extortion, harassment, or any form of misconduct while enforcing the traffic laws would face severe disciplinary sanctions.
He urged all road users including police officers, military personnel, and operatives of other security agencies—to immediately acquaint themselves with traffic regulations and comply strictly to avoid arrest and court prosecution.
The police chief maintained that strict compliance with road rules remains essential to easing traffic congestion, preventing fatal crashes, and ensuring the unhindered flow of vehicular movement across Enugu State.
“CP Giwa urges all motorists, including police officers and other security personnel, to familiarise themselves with and strictly obey traffic laws to avoid arrest and prosecution,” the statement added.
The command emphasized that the enforcement drive will cover every existing traffic law and regulation applicable to motorists operating within the state, warning that no offender will be spared once apprehended.
