The management of the Abuja Continental Hotel has acknowledged the Picketing action commenced on Monday 24th August by members of the Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association (HOPSSSA), affiliated with the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).
In a statement released on behalf of the Hotel’s Management by the Cluster Director, Human Resources, Mr. Niyi Agoro, the management expressed respect for the fundamental right of workers and freedom of association as deemed fit by people, and backed by the nation’s constitution.
However, the Hotel rejected allegations of unfair labour practices and the notion of an attempt to prevent employees from exercising their rights to association.
“Abuja Continental Hotel is not opposed to the right of workers to associate freely. We know that this right is guaranteed under Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and Management fully respects it”. the statement read.
The statement also noted that while freedom of association is allowed, the freedom not to associate should also be respected. Employees should not be compelled, intimidated or coerced to join unions or associations, but their individual choices should rather be honoured.
The hotel management emphasised the commitment to employees welfare through its relevant resolution committees and internal channels meant to aid the employees in smoothly interfacing with the management.
“Abuja Continental Hotel operates an open-door policy and maintains established channels through which employees can raise concerns, seek clarification, and have workplace issues addressed. The Hotel also has relevant internal committees and grievance-resolution mechanisms designed to facilitate constructive employee engagement.”
According to the statement, the hotel has reviewed and improved the welfare and working conditions of its employees through “HMO coverage, training and development, career progression and employee-focused initiatives”.
The management further expressed concern towards the forceful blocking of the Hotel’s access points which has inconvenienced guests, employees, and several stakeholders.
The statement concluded by calling for dialogue with mutual respect to all parties, engagement in good-faith, while remaining true to its values and ambition to be Nigeria’s Premier Luxury and MICE destination.
