The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, worked against his interests during the 2023 presidential election.

Obi made the allegation while discussing his experience in the 2023 election and outlining how his camp intends to approach the 2027 presidential poll.

“I have proof Mahmood Yakubu worked for my opposition,” Obi said.

According to the former Anambra State governor, his camp made the mistake of relying on assurances from INEC during the 2023 election instead of taking additional steps to protect its interests.

“In 2023 we took things for granted. We believed INEC. We believed what they said they would do.”

Obi alleged that Yakubu had assured Nigerians and the international community that the electoral process would be properly conducted but claimed that the former INEC chairman ultimately acted in favour of his political opponents.

“The INEC Chairman convinced the world that he would do the right thing, when in fact he was working for the opposition.”

Reflecting on the 2027 election, Obi said his approach would be different, stressing that his camp would not rely solely on assurances from electoral authorities.

“This time, we will only trust them by doing the right thing ourselves.”
