The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned Nigerians to be vigilant against fraudulent messages and emails falsely claiming to originate from the bank.

In a statement issued by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Ali, the apex bank said such messages are designed to mislead the public and spread false information.

According to the CBN, the fraudulent communications often urge recipients to click suspicious links while circulating misleading claims about the bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy matters.

Ali noted that these scams are also aimed at compromising users’ personal data, with cybercriminals attempting to gain access to private accounts through phishing tactics.

She advised Nigerians to rely only on the bank’s official communication channels and verify any information before taking action.

“The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria remains www.cbn.gov.ng,” she stated, urging the public to avoid engaging with unverified platforms.

The CBN also outlined precautionary steps for the public, including refraining from clicking unknown links, avoiding sharing personal or financial information on suspicious websites, and confirming the authenticity of any communication through trusted sources.

Members of the public were further encouraged to report suspected fraudulent messages, emails, or websites to relevant law enforcement authorities.

Reaffirming its commitment to financial system security, the CBN said it is continuously strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to combat digital fraud and protect Nigerians.
