The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of allegedly using Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) funds to support the 2027 re-election campaign of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the opposition party claimed that more than N800 billion meant for development and public welfare may have been diverted into political activities ahead of the next general election.
The statement, signed by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the alleged move as “shameless, cruel and criminal,” especially at a time many Nigerians are struggling with rising food prices, economic hardship and worsening insecurity.
According to the party, the allegations reinforce growing public concerns that while citizens are repeatedly urged to endure the painful effects of government reforms, massive public resources are allegedly being mobilised for political calculations ahead of 2027.
The ADC argued that since the removal of fuel subsidy and the implementation of foreign exchange reforms, APC-controlled states have received significantly higher allocations from FAAC without corresponding improvements in living conditions.
The party said many hospitals remain poorly equipped, roads continue to deteriorate and schools are still underfunded despite increased revenues flowing into state governments.
“It is morally indefensible that state governments receiving record-breaking allocations are unable to improve the lives of the people, yet could divert money to fund the President’s re-election ambitions,” the statement read.
The opposition party warned that if the allegations are confirmed, it would amount to a major betrayal of public trust and a misuse of funds meant for national development.
According to the ADC, FAAC allocations are constitutionally intended for infrastructure, healthcare, salaries, education, security and social welfare — not political campaigns.
“To divert public allocations into political accounts while citizens cannot afford food is wickedness on an industrial scale,” the party stated.
The ADC also questioned why several APC governors appear more focused on political alliances and electoral strategies rather than governance despite improved revenues in their states.
