Popular Nollywood actor and Lagos lawmaker, Desmond Elliot, has reacted to fresh revelations surrounding the controversial impeachment attempt against former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Elliot admitted that he signed the impeachment notice against Obasa “by mistake,” explaining that he believed the action had the backing of the presidency.
The lawmaker disclosed that he had only recently returned from South Africa, where he attended a wedding, and was still unsettled when the document was presented to him for signing.
According to reports, the impeachment drama unfolded during the January 2025 leadership crisis within the Lagos Assembly, where Obasa was temporarily removed over allegations of misconduct before later returning following interventions reportedly linked to President Bola Tinubu.
Reacting to recent remarks made by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Elliot said he was surprised to learn that the political crisis allegedly almost affected his own position.
“It came as a shock,” Elliot said while reacting to the controversy.
His comments have since sparked widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians criticising his explanation and questioning the level of political influence allegedly exercised by the presidency in Lagos politics.
Reacting on X, user @Mujaahid_1 wrote:
“You are coming on National TV to say you think impeachment of a state’s speaker is from the President? lol. where are you driving to?”
Another user, @bright_iteshi, questioned Elliot’s decision-making:
“So because a document is from the Presidency you just sign even though you don’t understand or agree with it. You have no mind of your own???”
A third user, @Donniembaeyi, also criticised the development, writing:
“So this is the politics and democracy, presidency and give directives to impeach someone and you do it with no hesitation.”
Others argued that the incident further reinforced claims that political decisions in Lagos State are heavily influenced by powerful figures behind the scenes.
“When they want to deceive you, they will say there is a GAC that controls Lagos. However, it is obvious that the entire political architecture of Lagos is controlled by Tinubu,” @nadoches commented.
