The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed viral social media reports claiming that Boko Haram suspects were arrested within the Ilorin metropolis, describing the allegations as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said no Boko Haram member or insurgent was apprehended anywhere in the state.
According to the police, the reports were entirely unfounded and should be disregarded by members of the public.
Clarifying the incident that triggered the rumours, the command explained that operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) intercepted a truck conveying Fulani travellers during an intelligence-led surveillance operation in Ilorin on Tuesday night, May 27, 2026.
The police said the vehicle and its occupants were professionally screened, searched, and profiled in line with standard security procedures.
Following the search, no incriminating item, weapon, or security threat was discovered on the travellers, who reportedly stated that they were heading to Jigawa State.
The command added that the travellers’ details were properly documented before they were safely escorted out of the metropolis to continue their journey.
Meanwhile, the police also confirmed the arrest of three suspected armed robbers and vandals along the Asa Dam/Dangote Road axis of Ilorin.
According to the command, the suspects were apprehended by the newly established VCRU following complaints from residents over criminal activities around the Tanke and Asa Dam areas.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly belonged to a criminal syndicate involved in vandalising government-installed solar streetlights and carrying out robbery operations.
Items recovered from the suspects included two locally made pistols, pliers, and suspected hard drugs.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Adekimi Ojo, commended the VCRU operatives for what he described as an intelligence-driven breakthrough.
He also reassured residents that the command remained committed to maintaining security across the state and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports capable of threatening public peace.
